Adding a Non Fiction Piece to Your Narrative Lessons

For me, Empowering Writers has made it so easy to teach all genres all the time in my classroom. Incorporating all genres into your lessons truly shows the depth of knowledge that students have about the salient skills of each and their understanding of authors purpose. This last week when I was over at our elementary I saw these cute student samples hanging in the hall- so of course I stopped to ask about the lesson and take pictures to share with you all!

This lesson began with the narrative book Salamander Room. Mrs. Harter wanted to add in an informational writing piece too. Her students read the nonfiction piece Salamanders and then used the response to text sentence starters to write about what they learned! I love how easy it was to add in a companion lesson from another genre! Plus to make it even better, the students got to paint a picture to go with their writing.
