Look at these samples from 3rd grade! They are busy as can be preparing for their reading STAAR test coming up next month. After reading an article on the monarch butterfly, students annotated and added subtitles for each paragraph. The annotation skills that we have built on are really paying off! 

     

Next, they wrote a descriptive segment that described the behaviors of the butterfly from the article. In the second paragraph, students wrote a response to the non-fiction text using EW's sentence starters! Later, students had to develop their own STAAR-like questions from the reading passage. 

 

I am so impressed with how far our students have come! And you just can't help but love the word referents they came up with for the titles!😍
